Engine-specific experience

BMW engine concerns are not all the same

On N20/N26 engines, timing and oil-pump drive noise has documented application limits. External oil-filter housing leaks on certain six-cylinder engines require attention to nearby belt condition. Rod bearings and main bearings are separate internal-engine jobs. We explain these differences on dedicated pages rather than promising the same fix for every BMW.

BMW timing systems

Certain N20/N26 models have manufacturer-documented timing and oil-pump drive chain concerns. We investigate noises and correlation faults by engine code and distinguish chain wear from other causes.

Rod bearings, main bearings and crankshafts

Our BMW internal-engine services include bearing work and evaluation of crankshaft condition. We inspect and explain wear, lubrication and the overall rotating assembly rather than treating bearings as a universal replacement item.

Oil consumption and engine smoke

A BMW that burns oil may have a leak, crankcase ventilation issue, valve-seal condition or internal wear. For certain older N63/S63 engines BMW issued manufacturer guidance, but the symptoms still require testing.

Engine rebuilding and replacement

We can assess rebuild feasibility and replacement options if an engine has sustained significant damage. We also handle ongoing BMW maintenance and other mechanical repairs.

Start with the symptom. Not a parts list.

Tell us when the issue happens: during a cold start, at idle, under acceleration or after the engine warms up. Let us know about recent work and any warning messages. That history helps guide the inspection instead of starting with a guess.

Our BMW service conversations cover engine performance, leaks, cooling concerns, unusual noises, braking and ride quality. Bring the year, model and engine information if you have it so we can confirm the work and appointment availability.

Timing concerns deserve a closer look.

A startup rattle or a timing-related fault needs an evaluation of the specific engine. We discuss what has been found, whether more testing is needed, and which components belong in the proposed repair. We do not recommend a timing-chain replacement from a sound description alone.

An independent option for your BMW.

From a daily-driver sedan to a family SUV, the aim is straightforward: understand the issue and make a repair decision that fits the vehicle. Contact the shop about your 3 Series, 5 Series, X3, X5 or other BMW. Capabilities and parts availability are confirmed for the particular model and repair.

Greg's Auto Repair is an independent shop. Vehicle and manufacturer names identify the vehicles discussed; no dealership or manufacturer affiliation is implied.

Before your visit

Good questions.
Clear answers.

Still not sure where to start? Talk with the shop about your vehicle and the concern.

Can I bring a BMW with a check engine light?

Yes. Tell us the warning message, symptoms and whether the light is flashing or steady when you call. We will discuss the next step; reading a code alone is not the same as diagnosing the cause.

Do you give a timing-chain price over the phone?

We can discuss the vehicle and likely inspection process. A firm scope and price depend on the engine, diagnosis, parts and any additional work found.

Are you a BMW dealership?

No. We are an independent repair shop. BMW names identify vehicles we service and do not imply manufacturer affiliation.
